[Ardour-Users] A4.4: Critical bug using calf's lv2

Exactly. I get what you mean, you think it's pointless to bundle plugins
because many will ignore them anyway, often "just because". Still, I think
they're a place to start and something you can depend on. Pandering to the
trends is ultimately pointless, but I'm not saying that bundled plugins
have to be the be-all-end-all plugins to guide you to the top of the charts
(I've seen similar words written in the past, unfortunately).

On platforms such as Linux, I believe they would be a much needed help
since too many resort to shady stuff (such as the CALF plugins). On OS X or
Windows, I agree that with the plethora of plugins available, both free and
commercial, both sloppy and excellent, it may be something of a waste
(although more and more software houses tend to integrated solutions
nowadays), and a DAW should be a digital multitrack first and foremost
anyway, and yet, although these days I mix on REAPER (Windows), I've lately
mixed an album using mostly the bundled plugins. (The comp, gate and EQ are
especially excellent, with clear, no-frills UIs and no nonsense). I have
over 100 plugins in my library, some of them excellent, but at the end of
the day, it's too much of a hassle and a distraction.

Check out the Waves website(s). You will find a substantial range of
compressors, limiters and EQs.

Check out websites of hardware FX processor companies. You will find a
substantial range of compressors, limiters and EQs. You will find people
raving about the sound of one of them and dismissing others.

It doesn't matter whether people's opinions on this stuff are all
placebo/psychosomatic/self-suggestion/bullshit. What matters is that people
believe that EQ <X> sounds better (on some material, on all material) than
EQ <Y>.

In such a world, claiming that we have picked the "best" one of any of
these plugins seems a bit pointless.

But we might do it anyway.
