I remember a similar situation a few years ago where Poul-Henning Kamp 
(freebsd) asked for support from the community.

After a  bit of googling (it's an official verb in Swedish now days) I found 
the funding page. It was in 2004 he asked for help and it was for 3 month of 
payed development.

I see a similar approach here. Asking the community for help seems to be the 
way to go. Probably the community doesn't give it all but it looks as it gives 
a boost to the donation effort from both individuals and organizations. It's 
the familiar snowball effect. One problem might be that it has to snow.
