Yes, as far as I can tell, it's impossible to set these.  In these pics

(page has changed, re-load if necessary) you can see (well, maybe you can't
see, but trust me) the volume/gain area "greyed out",  there is nothing I
can do to change the values.  Anyone run into this?

However, I noticed that once I set up this useless agg device, apparently
Ardour was successfully "faked out" into thinking that there was a device it
could connect to , and so it let me actually start the application and load
in some sounds for a new session.

I noticed that sound (output at least, which is all I care about) was
working at this point, even though I hadn't even started up Jack yet.

Then  I noticed something even stranger.  I loaded in some audio to a
session, and noted that the second or third instance of a sound (2nd and 3rd
region copies of a sound) didn't actually play.  Odd . . .   (This is from a
session entirely created from within Ardour).
