Dav=-0,

Silly ( frustrating ) thing that, since many linux users rave about the RME HDSP series.

I can't speak highly enough of this as a choice of interface.
three blocks of eight ADAT optical i/o.
It's so simple, ADAT copes with you synch issues, ( the Hammerfall ismaster ) and you get to chose from the plethora of ADAT capable kit outthere, which is plenty.

The only problem i had, being newly in the market for studio gear, wasthat many I/O devices exist now which although equiped with ADAToptical ports, are MEANT tob be controlled by proprietary software, using standard 1394 cables in non-standard ways.

The Focusrite Saffire 26i/o was prime example.
Sounded fine in asio, but would not even start up in linux, not through FreBob or any other how.
Back to the shop it went, to be replaced by the

Focusrite OctoPre - a great sounding 8-preamp single-rackspace device, with ADAT card option.
Annoyingly, when i went to install the ADAT card, i noticed there was no output port. RATS!!
i needed that to monitor through!!
Why bother NOT putting an out on the card? OH WELL>>>
Back to the shop with the OctoPre, to be replaced by the

FocusriteOctoPreLE -
YAY!! eight ins and outs on the card. Installed the card in about fifteen minutes,
and fired up Ardour.
the Hammerfall with OctoPreLE works ilke a dream.
The OctoPreLE has no compressors/limiters, which make it cheaper than the first two Focusrites,
with eight ins and outs.
I'm considering some more 'posh' preamps/converters soon to supplement.

It's wonderful having a choice!

my friend has shelled out for a new 'ProTools' rig - i'm sure he'll do great things with that, but it makes me kinda sad as well.
I want to sway him in the Ardour direction!
