If you're building a RAID array just for your session space and not the
whole system, then I'd think you can probably get away without having to
reinstall your OS. You might need to enable some more settings in your
kernel config to support your particular hardware and roll a new kernel,
though...

Note that RAID 0+1 requires a minimum of 4 disks - a pair to stripe data
across another pair to mirror the first pair. Your motherboard would need
to have 4 SATA ports if you plan to use all SATA drives, or you'd need a
PCI or PCI express expansion card (again depending on your motherboard)
SATA controller that has more ports on it. Software RAID can also place
more load on your CPU, but should be enough to get you started, then if
you decide that you want to move to a hardware RAID in the future, then
you can do that.

As far as a good howto, that really depends on your distro, which I
believe is Fedora Core 7, correct? I didn't come across a howto that was
specific to Fedora, but a good starting point is the info in the Linux
Documentation Project, at:

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Software-RAID-HOWTO.html

It also provides more information on the different RAID types and some of
their pros and cons. For something that's more specific to Fedora, you
may want to check some of the Fedora forum sites, like
http://www.fedoraforum.org/

Hope this helps
