i don't have many thoughts. i've not heard of this behaviour before.
there have been growing numbers of problems recently with people who
have the newer firmware which is still not properly supported by the
ALSA driver. but in that case, you get no sound from the device at all. 
the behaviour you are describing (locking up X) is much more severe than
that, and is unlikely to be related. however, lets start at the
beginning, by posting the output of /sbin/lspci
