I'll agree with this.  The Gentoo guys have done a pretty good job of 
demystifying their ALSA setup docs, though the last time I looked at them, 
there were some pieces that weren't clear if they needed to be done only 
on 2.4 kernels or only on 2.6 kernels.  It's been awhile, so it's possible 
the docs have been refined further since then.

I'll be able to provide an honest assessment of the RME stuff in a few 
weeks once my Digiface and A/D converters come in.
