I don't know about preferred, but I've never had any problems
recording to reiserfs.

I don't think there's any technical difference, it's up to your preference.
I think of /mnt a the de facto standard place to put occasionally-mounted
drives, e.g. floppies, cd-roms.

The Delta 1010, 66, and 44 are solid performers with linux / jack / ardour.
Assuming the feature set meets your needs. I have the 66 and never
had a problem with it.

You'll want to get used to using envy24control (comes with alsa) to
control the soundcard's many settings, e.g. the monitor mixer.
