thanks derek.

I hope this is not asking too much
I have tried to outline what i have done
I expect you will ask me some more specific questions ;)

while i have apt-get install ardour, jack, alsa
ardour still wont find jack

so i have back tracked (the server machine, an old pc but the easiest
for me to tweak as its local)
fresh sarge install, webserver stuff running, no jack or alsa, ardour
sources.list to " testing"
see more info below
i noticed a whole heap of alsa and jack related apps in synaptec manager..
wondering which ones to install
i will make not of all this here on this twiki
http://mec-symonds.eng.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Saqqara/HomeRecordingStudioOs#What_debian_distro
http://mec-symonds.eng.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Saqqara/HomeRecordingStudioSetup

i can also hold off on sarge and try and fix ubuntu first.. whatever you
think is easier.

PLEASE NOTE if you think in in over my head, askign too much please say
so now ;)
