Thanks for the advice re the Word Clock cables Jody, does the cable
have to have the 75ohm per meter impedance as well as the terminators
on the cards. I have plenty of T-peices (just waiting to be used).

I've resolved the disk throughput problem by installing a SATA 120Gb
(*mb buffer) Western Digital drive, and the 16 chanels are now
available in ardour. The drive is thus

/dev/hdg:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   3856 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1926.37 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  148 MB in  3.03 seconds =  48.90 MB/sec

hdparm -dvi /dev/hdg

/dev/hdg:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 16383/255/63, sectors = 234441648, start = 0

So the throughput problem is resolved however Ardour ( 0.9beta24
ardour/gtk 0.565.2 libardour 0.565.2 0.861.3)  ardour is still saying
the disk is too slow even for 2 channels at 22050 this is the error
(I'm pretty sure this can't be right)

The disk system on your computer was not able to keep up with ardour ,
specifically it failed to read data from disk quickly enough to keep
up with playback.

I know this is not right and I'm sure the machine is capable now.
Please help, I would really like to be recording. Thanks
