No, it isn't that common for me to store much email until I started
using Gmail. I don't store much here locally but I do use a reasonable
amount of their storage. Currently I'm storing about 250MB of email on
Gmail. They allow me to store 2.5GB of email and attachments and they
search quite fast so it's really nice for list junkies...

I completely agree that searching email from all lists is pretty
inconsisten in terms of results but so are forums.

This is one of those places where I think it's cool for someone to put
their money where their mouth is. Register a URL. Pay $5/month. Buy
some space on a server and set it up. If there is a need and it's run
well then Field of Dreams wins and 'they will come'. If not, well then
it wasn't needed and three months later you shut it down. Probably
costs $25 to try it out.
