All of the envy24 chipset cards will do this and Ardour does do a good
job of compensating. I crank my sample size up to 2048. I don't use a
hardware mixer either (although I do use a couple of tube mic preamps
and a tube compressor).

You might want to try Steve Harris' SC4 LADSPA plugin.
