I tried A3 some days ago on a spare ArchLinux system
(which means it has quite recent versions of everything,
to the point of a full system update usually breaking
something) but it failed to compile.

Anyway there should not be any GUI issue involved for
'export region'. Open the file, write as many channels
as there are in the region, and be done with it.

Do you mean something like:

cd <session>/interchange/<session>/audiofiles
makemulti --caf --24bit B-format-9%a.wav B-format-9%b.wav B-format-9%c.wav B-format-9%d.wav B-format-9%e.wav B-format-9%f.wav B-format-9%g.wav B-format-9%h.wav B-format-9%i.wav B-format-9%j.wav B-format-9%k.wav B-format-9%l.wav B-format-9%m.wav B-format-9%n.wav B-format-9%o.wav B-format-9%p.wav $pathtofinalthedestination/whateveritiscalled.caf

???

And that's only 16 channels. And crossing my fingers that I didn't
forget some channel, got the order right, there are no other typos,
etc. etc.
That's what I did half a year ago. Today I just use another application
to record Ardour's output, which is somewhat more reliable.

Looking even at Ardour2's code I'd need some months of study to find
my way into it. And even then you can't be sure that changing X won't
affect Y. It has just become way too complicated.

Apart from that, the moment Ardour drops OSX support I'll donate
1000 Euros. But not before. When I get a version that only does
recording, playback and editing and *nothing more* again I'll
donate 1000 Euros.

Ciao,
