Before 0.99 (or some time around april 2005) the MTC sent by ardour just 
wasn't correct, so MTC slaves would complain no matter what kernel you ran. 
Regarding kernels; I may be wrong here (somebody please correct me) but I 
think the granularity of the quarter frame transmission has to do with jack 
latency settings rather than kernel timing. In my experience, if you run 
ardour as an MTC master; use low latency settings in jack.
