And here I completely disagree. I find it very useful in collage type work 
with lots of small region spread out on many tracks.
And besides, there is no reason to actually use the edit cursor.
The way I work, and the way ardour is designed,  is to edit with one hand on 
the keyboard and one hand on the mouse. In a way the keyboard supplies an 
extra 128 mouse buttons.
Pressing a key while clicking takes no more time than clicking. Pressing a 
key-combo takes no more time than clicking. 

And I also think it is bad interface design to supply two orthogonal ways of 
editing. It becomes very confusing if in one mode the mouse does A and in 
another mode, that is meant to accomplish the same thing, the mouse does B.
