hi,

a quick status report on the presonus StudioLive 24.4.2:

takashi sakamoto, who works on the firewire audio stack of the linux kernel,
got back to me. with his help i was able to discover that the StudioLive
24.4.2 uses two chips (1st ASIC 16 in/16 out; 2nd ASIC 10 in/16 out), i.e. 32
out/26 in total. the alsa dice module actually detects and supports all of
them out-of-the-box. caveat: it's one "sound card" but split into the two
devices. that is why i only got 16 channels in/out -- it's only the first
device when you pick "studiolive" as your sound card.

takashi recommended using jack with the card's first device as input and the
second as output. i haven't used jack for a long time and didn't quite get it
to run today, will have to keep trying this. funny how you forget about
everything so fast...

i wonder if this workaround will actually produce all the board's channels,
not just the inputs of one device and the outputs of the other. and if a
virtual multi device would work as an alternative:

  http://www.jrigg.co.uk/linuxaudio/ice1712multi.html
  (adjusted to the 16/10 channels)

but so far i couldn't get that to work either.
