how did you install the calf plugins? if you're running ubuntu 18.04, you 
could add the KXStudio repositories to your configuration and use their 
prebuilt packages of both ardour (5.12) and calf (0.90.1):
 https://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/Repositories

at least that should resolve library linking issues which could be the cause 
for the crashes you see. i'm using that setup on three different machines for 
years, does the job. the meta packages help with getting a functioning setup:
