Each instrument and sound intent has their own approach.

What I do is synth-based music.  The acoustic guitar, and acoustic bass
guitar at times, in it are there to blend with the synths, to add this
real instrument aspect, but not that much as to include fret noise that
would distract from the overall blend.  W/o talking technique per se I
consider my playing to be on the clean side of things in both guitar
and bass.

It's quite rare after all, if not exceptional, to see mics pointing at
the fret board past the 12th fret towards the head, to focus on fret
noise.  I'm always surprised when people comment "you don't want fret
noise, but that's a part of the instrument!" as if the mere mention of
it is akin to declare that Cheez Whiz is cheese. Not to mention the
knife technique to spread Cheez Whiz on toast :)
