That explains it then. Here `lsusb` prints

 Bus 001 Device 007: ID 1235:8004 Focusrite-Novation

1235:8004 is the 18i6.

The kernel module supports

  0x1235, 0x8012 // 6i6
  0x1235, 0x8002 // 8i6
  0x1235, 0x8004 // 18i6
  0x1235, 0x8014 // 18i8
  0x1235, 0x800c // 18i20

if your device has a different USB ID, the kernel module won't recognize
it and you'll have to patch sound/usb/mixer_scarlett.c and/or contact
alsa-devel email list.
