The musician always interacts with the instrument. While doing a
recording, the musician is "physically present". Why does it apply to
analog synth vs digital analog synth emulations, too? The response of a
e.g. a Nord lead synth is very good, a musician could interact with the
synth in the same way, as when using an analog synth. The same kind of
interaction is impossible when using a computer. Apart from audio
latency issues, there is MIDI jitter and e.g. an USB remote control for
e.g. filter potentiometers that isn't optimised for usage with this
particular synth emulation. Tactile interaction does matter a lot. We
could use touch screens to get some new musically features, that aren't
provided by the analog domain, OTOH the sense of a cable in between your
fingers and the muscle movement to make a connection for a real modular
synth keeps us alive. Motivity isn't separated from thinking. The
limited motivity by digital assistance does affect intelligence. A lot
of akademisch scientists claim that the loss of human intelligence is
caused by environmental toxins. I bet that much more of that loss is
caused by missing (inter)action. My generation most likely was exposed
to much more environmental toxins than the later generations, so the
loss of human intelligence much likely is caused by something else.
Actually digital assistance for digital natives is present all the
times ;).
