Is there anything on Ardour's (or jack's) side that can be configured to
use larger (or smaller) buffers, or anything, short of getting a new
machine based on i7 with 32GB of RAM ?

Kernel is real-time. jackd, of version
1.9.9.5+20130622git7de15e7a-1ubuntu1, is invoked as:

/usr/bin/jackd --sync -T -P80 -ndefault -dalsa -dhw:M1010LT -r44100
-p64 -n4

(yes, the -n option is still there)
