Thank you for answering, Brett and Gunter!

I see my task of sorting out 80 minutes is quite achieveable compared to 
taking on a 10-hour recording...

So I'll look (more!) into expanders and compressors, maybe with a limiter?

I'd be thankful for advice on how to avoid 'the bucket sound' that I 
achieved (the original recording sounds good, just too low. Amplifying 
it I get too loud peaks and compressing / limiting I get 'rumbling').
