Assumed the card should completely stop working.
Did you test different USB ports and USB cables?
Or is there still audio output when playing a track?

IIRC a signal from the mic is available by the sound device, so it
can't be a broken mic cable?

You mentioned a Sure mic, I don't remember what mic. A mic with an
off/on switch ;)? Did you already rule out such issues?
