I'm afraid you are right to be cautious.  You might want to install Jesse
and the driver in question on some other disk capable of booting the same
computer.  I can't think of another way to test that doesn't risk breaking
your ability to start X.

I went a few rounds with similar problems on my laptop's AMD/ATI video
card.  I decided to live with the slow redraws because transparency and
everything else works.  I keep hoping someday I'll install a batch of
random updates and suddenly my meters will look all smooth and natural.
