Plugins here are just like any other program, pieces of code that are
executed. If they run inside another program without isolation, then yes
if the plugin crashes it takes the host (here Ardour) with it.

Many plugins are well written, stable and safe to use. Some others are
not (or no longer e.g. due to non-maintenance: new libs old plugin code
as with the Invada case).
