Dave Brubeck routinely cancelled tours, concerts, TV performances
whenever Gene Wright, the black double bass player in the Brubeck
quartet, should be replaced or kept off-screen because of his skin
color.

Well, the point is a consistent performance. Countertenors sell better
in drag or at least extravaganza when singing pop. There is a lot to be
said for Midi controllers in accordion form with regard to portability
and expressive control, but the outcome of cognitive dissonance restrict
the available choice of sounds. Not so much for the bass side, but you
can't let the treble sound like a saxophone or even like a piano without
the audience being put off.

Frank Farian has a bit of a history putting up visually appealing
playback groups ("Boney M", "Milli Vanilli" and others) as a supplement
for commercially successful studio productions mainly featuring himself.

Modern music videos _have_ to work mostly with playback because you
could not otherwise maintain a continuous soundtrack through the
waterfalling changes of scene.

You are selling a complete package, not just music.
