You pretty much hit it.  As others have mentioned, you could run an
instance of Ardour instead of JackRecord etc., but the same basic
concept remains, in 2.x there isn't an automated way to do this,
though I believe Saber has already implemented an automated way to do
this in 3.x when that gets released.
