If this is the same problem I've had with the last few versions of
Ardour2 on Linux, the workaround is to try again until it's exported
correctly. If the export window disappears immediately after clicking
on Export, it hasn't worked (it writes a truncated file without audio
data). Keep trying until you see the progress bar working.

On my Linux system this usually takes 2 or 3 attempts, but sometimes
more.
