Well, it does not make an actual difference: the caterwauling stays,
regardless of whether Ardour is Time Master or not, uses Internal timing
or Jack, and whether Time transmit/receive is enabled on the Midi
expander (Solton MS40) or not.  Relevant recurring output appears to be

    MRB: Unable to reserve space in buffer, event skipped

And before that, possibly not related:

    ARDOUR says 10927616 JACK says 409600
