I think I saw this same issue some time ago, but only with jack2. Back
then I didn't have the patience to investigate any further and
installed jack1 instead.

You might want to take a look wich version of jack you have installed.
>From a quick look at Ubuntu's package database I saw they have both
jack1 and jack2 in their repos for Maverick. Good luck. :)
