the usual approach is to use a post-fader send for effects. that way, 
the wet-to-dry ratio will remain constant when you change the track 
fader setting during the mix. this is consistent with nature: if you 
sing a loud note in a reverberant room, you will excite the room more, 
and hence get more reverb back. sing softly, and hear a dryer sound.
