It's happened a couple more times here but so far I can't trigger it
at will. It happens regardless of whether I've disabled auto connection
to the master bus, contrary to my initial observations.

If I've been working for a long time on one particular session containing
about 16 tracks with a lot of short regions (drum samples), then open a new
session, it sometimes triggers the error. There's a console message from
jackd when it occurs:

unknown source port in attempted connection [ardour:master/out 1]

It's possible that a particular work pattern is triggering it. For the
last couple of days I've been doing a lot of drum sample editing and mixing,
which involves a lot more connecting and disconnecting than I would
normally do.
