It is actually easier to install Ardour on Linux than OSX, it is maintained in
Debian and probably several other distributions, typing one line:

apt-get install ardour

[or using a package manager GUI to do it for you] will get the binaries and
dependencies downloaded and installed on a Debian based system, there are also
several audio-oriented distributions that include Ardour from the original
install disks without any additional install.

One difficulty with this is that there is no count of downloads, they will be
from hundreds of mirrors around the world, so while the Ardour website offers
some indication of OSX usage it offers very little clues as to Linux usage.

Hence the desire to count users in a more direct way.
