this case sounds like what happens to my wife every couple of months.
No one on the Gnome lists I've tried knows how to fix it. A few, very
few, have even seen it.

Either use the new account and move files or consider deleting the (I
think) 4 .gnome directories and then setting up your new desktop from
scratch. you can just move the .gnome directories to some other name
as a test.
