sorry, i forgot two things: ubuntu usually doesn't have a root account to 
really login (password is deactivated). instead, the main user uses sudo to 
do administrative tasks. so actually, the command shoud be
 - sudo aptitude install ardour-i686

and the update procdure... once installed, it will get updated automatically 
by
 1. sudo aptitude update
 2. sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
