Late to the thread, sorry.

You could also try a couple of other options if you are set on using
Debian (which is a good thing, IMHO :).

A) use sid. Ardour 2.8.4 works fine for me (with sid.)

B) use apt pinning to pull in required packages from squeeze/sid.
