Xruns? Clipping? Not sure. I don't really have a lot of experience with
Ardour & computer audio (although I'm having a great time finding
out :) ).

I found this online "Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch"
http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/  which looks like it's
tailor-made for extreme stretching.

There's also a command-line app "soundstretch" which: "processes WAV
audio files by modifying the sound tempo, pitch and playback rate
properties independently from each other". You might already have it -
some packages pull it in as a dependency.
