thanks, fred -- i had lost the metering in the mixer window as well.
but i just discovered the channel meters had gotten switched to "input", rather than "post". i had been working at a distance from the screen, and must have inadvertantly done a ctrl-shift-click on one of the meter source buttons, which would have changed all the meters.
