John, from my experience the 2.6.25.4-rt5 is the best RT kernel; simply build 
the vanilla kernel then patch. Ensure the 'radix tree' option is disabled and 
don't use the group scheduling at all. normal rt caveats apply otherwise. they 
are spelled out clearly on the web. I am currently using the 2.6.26.6-rt11  
and all seems fine as well.
