Sounds like you're trying to start jack with the jackstart (or was it
startjack) command line. That should not be used for any modern kernels.
Just use jackd. (Remember to run jackd in realtime as well via -R ! )
 
Please note that your soundcard probably requires 3 periods/buffer to work
properly.
