ardour actually does this if you embed an external audio file that lives
on the same filesystem as your session. that is, it doesn't use the
original path, it creates a hard link within the regular audiofiles
directory, and then uses it as if the file belonged to ardour (since in
some sense, ardour does now own a copy of it that cannot be removed).

its true that if the "Save as..." destination is on the same filesystem,
its all very easy to do (ignoring Cleanup issues). as soon as it moves
to another FS, the choices get harder to present to the user.
