Yes, this is what loop recording does currently. This is exactly what
I have changed in my local version (it will make separate files for
each loop/punch) and why I think it may help (or at least further
obfuscate the real issue).

I tend to agree with you here. It should make a backup of the
session's original contents, warn you and then fix itself by pruning
the state.
