This happens to me sometimes. Here is a method wich consists to recover 
the .bak file. 

First make a copy of the xml files (in case something would go wrong).

Then in the ardour dir there should be a project.ardour.bak that is bigger 
than the one u try to open (If not both are corrupts).

Simply rename it without the .bak in place of the current one. This will 
restore the last previous save state before the corruption, if ur are lucky u 
will remember the few edits u made between the two states and soon at work 
again.  :)

The thing in this case, is to avoid saving the corrupt file of course, because 
u would lost ur only chance of rescue :)
