Just guessing. Try to apply the patch to the 2.6.16 kernel (not to the
22.214.171.124). The patch (afaik) is built on top of the first kernel of
each series. Usually the sub-version kernel upgrades are very small and
do not interfere with the realtime-preemption patch. But maybe this is
not the case right now with 16 subversion released after the 2.6.16.
