Yet another option is to split the regions into new speech chunk
regions and remove the intervening regions on each track. Pretty
labor intensive.

Yes, if a noise gate could be used it would be the easiest option by
far. But getting the attack of each speech segment to sound right
could be a real issue.
The SWH plugin set has a gate that might be worth trying.
