You're sure that the output of the effects bus which would normally be
routed to either the master fader or a sub-master of some type is
really hooked to the input of the spare track?

I believe I've done more or less what you're trying to do and didn't
have any trouble. Granted it was an older version and maybe a bug has
crept in somewhere, but what you want to do should be OK.
