snce SMPTE timecode is just an audio signal, it can be read from one
channel of a multichannel card.

however, other than some (excellent) experimental JACK plugins by Fons
Adriensen, there is no Linux software at this time that reads actual
SMPTE analog signals. everything that handles timecode does so assuming
that it has been transcoded to MTC.
