After years and years of not handling this topic very well Pro Tools
has finally added categories for plugins. You can look under general
headings like 'EQ', 'Dynamics', 'Signal Generators', 'VST', etc., for
the sort plugin you are looking for. This speeds things up
considerably.

I thought that this would be an even better idea if I could drag the
ones I used most to the top of the list but Digidesign didn't support
any way to do something like that. Maybe this would appeal to an
Ardour developer to look into:

1) Plugin catagory menus
2) Recent plugin list
3) Interactive placement of plugins within a list
