Kevin, if you need to get your material back to your mate then what is 
obviously missing here is

7. After the split you have a region that starts exactly at the 
beginning of the external material and you want to export exactly this. 
Ardour can export ranges so you set "Snap To" to "Region bounds", 
select the "Range" tool and mousedive in on the region you want. The 
range will start exactly at the beginning of the region and span to its 
exact end. Then you go "Export range to audiofile ...", make sure to 
select the specific track(s) and export. Your mate would have to find a 
way to align your file with his stuff's beginning and there you are.
