You don't understand what?  sends and inserts?

Have you used a real mixing board before?  Sends are used when you want to 
send a copy of the signal to some other place, like a bus.  Inserts are 
used when you want to insert something in line with the signal path, i.e. 
in->insert out->insert in->out
